NYC Weather Forecast: Possible Tropical Storm Remnants Bring Cool, Rain To City

High temperatures will barely hit 70 degrees, and rain will shower the city, in the wake of possible tropical storm Irma.

NEW YORK, NY — As Hurricane Harvey continues to batter the greater Houston area, another (much, much weaker) storm is brewing of the Atlantic coast near the Carolinas. Irma has yet to reach tropical storm or depression status, but it's effects will be felt in New York City today.

Temperatures will struggle to top 70 degrees, making for easily the coolest day of the late summer so far. Rain is forecasted to fall starting around mid to late afternoon. And winds will gust around 20 miles per hour in some places.

"A cloudy and unseasonably cool day is expected as gusty easterly winds persist," the National Weather Service says. "The mercury will struggle to rise to 70 degrees today, well below normal."

Whether Irma becomes a tropical storm or not, it's expected to make its way up the coast of the Carolinas before heading East out into the Atlantic. Coastal areas in the tri-state area have a chance of more rain.

"Rain chances will increase from the south as the afternoon progresses," the weather service says. "As the low passes well to the south and east tonight, rain will eventually taper off late tonight. The best chance for rain will be along the coast. Interior locations of the Hudson Valley of New York, northeast New Jersey and southern Connecticut should observe less rain."

As Irma moves out to sea by Wednesday, temperatures are expected to rise and sunshine return.

Until then, here's the hour-by-hour forecast to help you prepare for the day.
