NYC Weather Forecast: Snow Chances For MLK Weekend

Record-high temps this week are expected to drop back down below freezing by Friday night.

NEW YORK, NY — Warm temperatures and rainy skies reigned in NYC this week. But government weather forecasters expect temps to drop back down below freezing by Friday night — and stay cold enough just long enough to possibly allow for a dusting of snow over the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend.

Thursday's high of 65 degrees ended up breaking the all-time heat record for Jan. 12. "Record highs fell across much of the region this afternoon and will be followed by another unseasonably warm night," the National Weather Service said Thursday.

"Overnight lows will likely average 20 degrees above normal," or around 42 degrees, forecasters said.

By Friday morning, however, a colder front will move into the city. Friday is expected to be sunny with a high of 45 degrees.

Temps are then expected to drop down to 24 degrees overnight Friday, and likely won't surpass 34 on Saturday.

As of Thursday evening, forecasters were putting the chance of snow falling between noon and midnight Saturday around 50 percent.

"Any precipitation that falls will be in the form of snow and will be on the light side with a dusting or a coating possible," the weather service said.

From there, Sunday and Monday (MLK Day!) should warm up to around 40 degrees. Things could get messy Monday night into early Tuesday, though, when we could see some "light freezing rain or freezing drizzle."
