NEW YORK — Soak up the sun while it lasts. Nasty thunderstorms could pound New York City with hail, heavy rain and flash floods on Tuesday, the National Weather Service warns.

The storms are expected to soak Central Park with more than two inches of rain starting late Tuesday morning, the weather service's forecast shows. They are likely to bring "torrential" showers to the tri-state region in addition to a threat of large hail, damaging winds and flash floods, according to a hazardous weather outlook.

The showers will be heaviest after 2 p.m. Tuesday and could continue into Wednesday morning, according to the weather service.
