NYC Weather: Hailstones, Downpours Threaten City

NEW YORK CITY – A series of thunderstorms that could bring damaging winds and hailstones larger than an inch in diameter are set to hit New York City.

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook Tuesday as the storms approached.

They're expected to hit Tuesday afternoon and into the early evening, with heavy downpours bringing more than a quarter of an inch of rain.

Tuesday Afternoon
Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. High near 81. Light northeast wind. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday Night
Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday
A chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 11am. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday Night
A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 10pm, then a slight chance of showers between 10pm and midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Thursday
A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 87. North wind around 5 mph.

Partly cloudy, with a low around 72.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 91.
