NYC Weather: Hazardous Outlook Issued As Storms Approach

Thunderstorms could bring high winds and even hail, the National Weather Service said.

NEW YORK CITY – A series of storms approaching New York City Tuesday could bring hail, thunder and strong winds, forecasters said. A hazardous weather outlook has been issued.

The National Weather Service said a string of thunderstorms is expected to start passing through the city after 3 p.m.

"Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible within this line, with strong to damaging winds the primary threat," the NWS said.

Up to a quarter of an inch of rain is expected, though some of the thunderstorms could bring more.

The storms are expected to have passed by 7 p.m.

Tuesday
Showers likely before 3pm, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm between 3pm and 5pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. High near 61. Breezy, with a southwest wind 16 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday night
A 30 percent chance of showers before 7pm. Mostly clear, with a low around 35. Breezy, with a northwest wind 16 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph.

Wednesday
Sunny, with a high near 52. Breezy, with a west wind 18 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Wednesday Night
Partly cloudy, with a low around 39. West wind 9 to 14 mph becoming light after midnight.

Thursday
A 40 percent chance of rain, mainly after 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 8 mph in the morning.

Thursday Night
Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 47. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
