NYC Weather: Heat Advisory Issued, Heavy Rain On Way

Temperatures will feel close to 100 degrees, while up to two inches of rain could be on the way.

NEW YORK CITY – The city has been put under a heat advisory as it swelters with temperatures that will feel close to 100 degrees.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory Wednesday, warning people to avoid strenuous exercise and drink plenty of water.

"A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two of more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time," the NWS said.

The advisory is in place until Thursday night. Real temperatures are not expected to top 91 degrees, though with humidity it will feel much hotter.

The heat is expected to be followed Friday by thunderstorms that will bring heavy rain, the NWS said. Up to 2 inches is possible.

A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 89. Heat index values as high as 95. South wind 9 to 11 mph.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 91. Heat index values as high as 96. Southeast wind 5 to 9 mph.

Friday
A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Cloudy, with a high near 85. East wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Friday Night
Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 74. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Saturday
Showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 87. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
