NYC Weather: Heat Wave Brings Scorching Temps, Heat Index Above 100

NEW YORK CITY — The third heat wave of the year continues to bring sizzling temperatures to the New York City area, with Tuesday expected to be the hottest day of the week, according to forecasters.

A heat advisory for NYC is still in effect until Wednesday, and the National Weather Service has also issued an air quality alert until 11 p.m.

Tuesday will reach a high temperature of 95 degrees, and heat index values are poised to hit 100 degrees.

Possible rain showers will be avoided for at least today and Wednesday, according to forecasts.

Wednesday will be another hot day, with temperatures reaching 93 degrees with mostly sunny skies.

Thursday and Friday will be much cooler outside, with temperatures reaching 85 degrees.

Experts recommend avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon and evening hours, which is usually the hottest part of the day. People who must be outside are encouraged to drink plenty of water and take breaks to cool off in the shade, according to AccuWeather.

The city has opened more than 500 cooling centers residents can visit to stay cool during the heat wave. They are open to the public and include libraries, senior centers and other locations.
