NEW YORK — This work week is bound for a steamy start with temperatures near 80 degrees and thunderstorms looming over New York City on Monday. Following a chance of early-morning rain, isolated showers and storms could strike the city in the afternoon as the mercury climbs to a high near 77 in Central Park, the National Weather Service says.

The evening commute could be messy, as a chance of storms will linger into the 7 p.m. hour, according to the forecast.

The city should dry up overnight before rain possibly strikes again on Tuesday, the weather service says, with more showers expected on Friday.
