Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- NYC's cannabis industry was dealt a blow this week when 17 establishments selling weed received Cease and Desist letters from the state's newly formed cannabis authority. While weed has been legal to smoke in New York State since last year, the government has yet to officially issue any business licenses. (New York City Patch)
- The city quietly released the first of a series of new flood maps on Wednesday, aimed at helping New Yorkers to better prepare for the hazardous conditions caused by storms and hurricanes. How can you best prepare? Make sure you know your evacuation zone, gather necessary supplies, and make a plan. (The City)
- Seeing them as a fire hazard, NYCHA is considering banning e-bikes from public housing developments. Delivery workers, who rely on the motorized bikes and live in NYCHA, worry that could be detrimental to their livelihoods, as well as their ability to make deliveries in the complexes. E-bikes are considered to be a fire hazard, and are connected to at least 99 fire investigations in the city this year alone. (The City)
- Mayor Adams visited Rikers Island on Thursday, in the hopes of improving the relationship between inmates and correctional officers. At the same time, a group of interfaith religious leaders held a vigil outside of City Hall protesting the jail's inhumane conditions. (amNY)
- James Caan, the actor and NYC native famous for his portrayal of Sonny Corleone in "The Godfather," has died at 82. The son of a kosher meat wholesaler, Caan was born in The Bronx in 1940 and grew up in Sunnyside, Queens. (New York City Patch)

Are you a New York City resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

- ABBA fans rejoice–there's a free screaming of Mamma Mia in Astoria Park scheduled for July 17th.
