NYC Weekend Subway Service Changes July 27-28

Heads up: The 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, A, B, C, D, E, F, L, M, N, Q and W​ ​trains won't be running normally this weekend.

NEW YORK, NY — Here's how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will screw up your plans this weekend — from late Friday night, July 26, through early Monday morning, July 29 — in the name of "upgrading and maintaining our tracks, stations and signal systems in order to continue to provide our customers with safe and reliable service."

Getting around on the subway this weekend is going to be tough, as 17 train lines will be running with modified service. (For more New York City news delivered straight to your inbox sign up for Patch's free newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

1 train:

  • From 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, A/C trains, shuttle buses, and M3 will replace 1 trains between 137 St and 96 St due to critically important switch replacement work at the 96 Street Interlocking in Manhattan. The project will take place in phases, ultimately leading to the installation of entirely new switches between the northbound express and local tracks at the 96 St Interlocking on the Seventh Avenue 1/2/3 Lines.
    • This weekend, 1 service will run in two sections: between Van Cortlandt Park-242 St and 137 St, and between South Ferry and 96 St, and via the 3 to/from Harlem-148 St, skipping 145 St. Shuttle buses will run between 96 St and 137 St. Transfer at 96 St and/or 137 St.
  • Through early 2020, trains skip 168 St in both directions due to elevator replacement work. For alternate service take the AC at/to this station. Transfer between 1 and A trains at 59 St-Columbus Circle. A free out-of-system transfer with a MetroCard is available between the 207 St or 215 St 1 and 207 St A. Take the M5 to/from 157 St 1. Late nights, the M5 will run between 168 St and 157 St. This work is part of a major elevator replacement project at five separate "deep" stations in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan.   • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, uptown trains will skip 79 St and 86 St due to track and switch maintenance near 96 St. As an alternative, use a downtown 1 or 2 local to complete your trip. Transfer at 96 St or 72 St.

2 train:

  • From 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, free shuttle buses will replace trains between Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College and Franklin Av due to ongoing station rehabilitation work at President St. Sterling St, and Winthrop St. 2 trains will run between Wakefield-241 St and Franklin Av, and via the 3 line to/from Crown Hts-Utica Av. Free shuttle buses will make all 2/3/4 line station stops between Franklin Av and Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College. Transfer between buses and trains at Franklin Av or Nostrand Av.
  • From 11:45 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday to Monday, July 26 to July 29, uptown trains will skip 79 St and 86 St due to track and switch maintenance near 96 St. As an alternative, use a downtown 1 or 2 train to complete your trip. Transfer at 96 St or 72 St.

2/5 trains:

  • From 6:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and July 28, downtown trains will run express from E 180 St to 3 Av-149 St due to track maintenance including rail, plate and tie repairs. As an alternative, use an uptown 2 or 5 train to complete your trip. Transfer at 149 St-Grand Concourse or E 180 St.
  • Through July 2019, Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College bound trains will skip President St due to station rehabilitation work. During this closure, for service to President St, take a Flatbush Av-bound 2/5 to Sterling St and transfer to a Manhattan-bound 2 or 5 train. For service from President St, use the B44 local or B44 SBS bus. Or, take a Manhattan-bound 2/5 to Franklin Av and transfer to a Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College-bound 2 or 5 train.
  • Through August 2019, Manhattan-bound trains will skip Winthrop St due to station rehabilitation work. During this closure, for service to Winthrop St, use the nearby Sterling St or Church Avenue stations. Or, take a 2/5 train to Sterling St and transfer to a Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College bound 2 or 5. For service from Winthrop St, take the B44 local or B44 SBS bus, or 2/5 to Church Av and transfer to a Manhattan-bound 2 or 5 train.

3 train:

  • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, July 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, 1/2/4 trains and free shuttle buses will replace 3 service due to track and switch maintenance near 125 St. Free shuttle buses will run between Harlem-148 St and 135 St, stopping at 145 St. 1 trains will make 3 stops in Manhattan between Harlem-148 St and Chambers St (trains will skip 145 St). 2 trains will make 3 line station stops between 135 St and Franklin Av. 4 trains will make 3 stops between Franklin Av and New Lots Av. Transfer between 1/2 trains and buses at 135 St, and between 2 and 4 at Franklin Av.

4 train:

  • From 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, 4 service will run to/from New Lots Av. 4 trains will make all 3 line station stops between Nevins St and New Lots Av.
  • From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, July 27, to 10 p.m. Sunday, July 28, uptown trains will skip 183 St, Fordham Rd, Kingsbridge Rd, and Bedford Pk Blvd due to track replacement. As an alternative, use a downtown 4 train to complete your trip. Transfer at Mosholu Pkwy or Burnside Av.
  • From 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27, and from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, July 28, trains will run every 16 minutes between Burnside Av and Woodlawn Av due to track panel replacement between 183 St and Mosholu Pkwy. The last stop for some uptown trains will be Burnside Av; these trains will skip 170 St, Mt Eden Av, and 176 St. Transfer at Burnside Av to continue your trip.

5 train:

  • Through September 2019, Eastchester-Dyre Av-bound trains will skip Gun Hill Rd due to station rehabilitation work. For service to this station, take the 5 to Baychester Av and transfer to a Manhattan-bound 5. For service from this station, take the 5 to Pelham Pkwy and transfer to an Eastchester-Dyre Av bound 5.

7 train:

  • From 5:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 27, Flushing-Main St bound trains will run express from Queensboro Plaza to Mets-Willets Point to due to track maintenance. As an alternative, use a Manhattan-bound 7 train to complete your trip. Transfer at Mets-Willets Point, Junction Blvd, 74 St-Broadway, 61 St-Woodside, or Queensboro Plaza.

A train:

  • From 10 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, Manhattan-bound trains will run local from Euclid Av to Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts due to signal maintenance between Euclid Av and Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts.
  • From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer, the Rockaway Park/Beach 116 St S shuttle service will be extended to Rockaway Blvd to facilitate beach traffic to the peninsula. Customers can take any A train to connect with the shuttle at Rockaway Blvd. This seasonal service will also be available on Labor Day. A/C trains:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, downtown trains will run express from 168 St to 59 St-Columbus Circle due to track maintenance including drain cleaning between 168 St and59 St-Columbus Circle. As an alternative, use an uptown A local or C train to complete your trip. Transfer at 59 St-Columbus Circle, 125 St, 145 St, or 168 St. As a reminder, C trains do not during the late nights.

B train:

  • Beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 26, service will end early due to track maintenance near W 4 St-Wash Sq. As an alternative, take C/D and/or Q trains instead. As a reminder, B trains do not run on weekends.

D train:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, Norwood-205 St bound trains will skip 182-183 Sts due to track maintenance near Fordham Rd. As an alternative, use a Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound D train to complete your trip. Transfer at Fordham Rd or Tremont Av.
  • From 10:45 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound trains will skip DeKalb Av and run express from Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr to 36 St due to structural maintenance at DeKalb Av. For DeKalb Av, take the Q via transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq or Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr. For service to Union St, 4 Av-9 St, Prospect Av and 25 St, take the D to 36 St and transfer to a local Manhattan-bound D or N train. For service from these stations, take the D or N to Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and transfer to a Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound D.

E train:

  • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, July 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, trains will run via the F line in both directions between 21 St-Queensbridge and W 4 St-Wash Sq due to ongoing signal modernization work along the Queens Boulevard corridor. As an alternative, use the nearby F line stations on 6 Av, 7/A/C/D/R, and/or Lexington Av 4 local or 6 to complete your trip. For Queens Plaza, use the R, days/evenings. Transfer at W 4 St-Wash Sq A/C/E, Times Sq-42 St/Port Authority 7/A/C/R, 47-50 Sts D/E/F, 21 St-Queensbridge E/F, and/or 74 St-Roosevelt Av 7/E/F/R. Free shuttle buses will connect Court Sq-23 St, 21 St-Queensbridge, and Queens Plaza.

E/F trains:

  • From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, July 27, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, trains will run local in both directions in Queens due to ongoing signal modernization work along the Queens Boulevard corridor.

L train:

  • Until summer 2020, L trains will run every 20 minutes between Brooklyn and Manhattan, in both directions on weekends and weeknights. Within Brooklyn, L trains run every 10 minutes in both directions on weekends from 6 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. NYC Transit encourages customers to take advantage of extensive and robust options in its alternative service plan for quicker travel or to avoid crowds.A dedicated website on the L Project is available with trip planning tools, information on the project and travel guides for stations from 8 Av to Lorimer St. Customers are also encouraged to sign up for a weekly email newsletter on the Project to get progress updates and reach Transit staff with feedback or questions. M train:

  • Through summer 2020, service ends at approximately 10 p.m. between Forest Hills-71 Av and 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr due to ongoing signal modernization work along the Queens Boulevard corridor. For Queens, take the R. For Court Sq-23 St, Lexington Av-53 St, and 5 Av/53 St, take the E. Transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq M/R or W 4 St E/M.
  • Through summer 2020, from 10 p.m. Friday to 1:30 a.m. Saturday, and from 6 a.m. Saturday to 1:30 a.m. Monday, special weekend M service to help accommodate customers during the L Project runs between Brooklyn and up to 96 St in Manhattan. M trains will run between Metropolitan Av and 47-50 Sts, and via the F to/from Lexington Av/63 St, and via the Q to/from 96 St.

N train:

  • From 3:45 a.m. Saturday, July 27 to 10 p.m. Sunday, July 28, free shuttle buses will replace trains between Astoria-Ditmars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza due to station renewal work at Astoria Blvd. N trains will run between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and Queensboro Plaza. Free shuttle buses will make all N line station stops between Queensboro Plaza and Astoria-Ditmars Blvd. Some buses departing from Ditmars Blvd will run express to Queensboro Plaza. Transfer between trains and buses at Queensboro Plaza. As a reminder, the Astoria Blvd station is closed for ongoing renewal work.
  • Through December 2019, trains will skip Astoria Blvd in both directions due to station renewal work to add four new elevators and other accessibility features, as well as demolish and rebuild the station mezzanine with more vertical clearance to over-height vehicles traveling below the station structure. For more details about this critical structural repair project, refer to this prior press release.
  • Through July 2019, trains will run local in both directions between 59 St and 36 St in Brooklyn due to structural rehabilitation work to repair and replace steel columns, lighting, ventilators, and deteriorated concrete, and perform water mitigation work to address water seepage in the express tunnel between the 59 St and 36 St stations. N trains will stop at 53 St and 45 St in both directions.

N/Q trains:

  1. From 11 p.m. Friday, July 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 29, Manhattan-bound trains are rerouted via the R (Lower Manhattan) from Canal St to Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr due to track maintenance and replacement including plate and tie renewal between Canal St and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr. Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound trains will stop at City Hall, Cortlandt St, Rector St, Whitehall St, Court St, Jay St-MetroTech, and DeKalb Av.

Q train:

  • From 5:45 a.m. Saturday, July 27, to 10 p.m. Sunday, July 28, Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound Q trains will run express from Prospect Park to Kings Hwy due to track maintenance between Prospect Park and Kings Hwy. As an alternative, use a Manhattan-bound Q train to complete your trip. Transfer at Kings Hwy, Newkirk Plaza, Church Av, or Prospect Park.

W train:

  • Beginning 8:30 p.m., Friday, July 26, service will end early due to track and switch replacement between Canal St and Atlantic-Barclays Ctr. As an alternative, take the N or R. As a reminder, W trains do not run on weekends.
