Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. New York City has detected its first juvenile case of monkeypox, health officials announced on Friday, while also stressing that the overall risk to children remains low. Cases in the city peaked earlier in August with an average of 72 per day, although rates appear to be dropping, as The New York Times reports. (New York City Patch)
  2. A dispute over NYC's education department budget likely won't be resolved before the start of classes in less than two weeks. Arguments are scheduled to be heard on September 29 in a lawsuit between a group of parents and teachers, and the city, over budget cuts. (Gothamist) Meanwhile, Governor Kathy Hochul indicated in a radio interview on Thursday that she is considering signing a bill passed this spring that would reduce classroom sizes in New York City's public schools. (Chalkbeat)
  3. New York City is considering housing some migrants arriving from Texas by bus in summer camps as a last resort if all other options are exhausted. A total of 6,300 asylum seekers and other newly arrived immigrants have entered the city's shelter system between April and August 22. (City Limits)
  4. A golf course in The Bronx owned by former President Donal Trump will host a Saudi-back golf tournament in October. Last year, then-Mayor Bill de Blasio was blocked by a judge from ending Trump's contract to run the course. (New York City Patch)
  5. An NYC-based nonprofit call Lemontree is connecting food-insecure New Yorkers with food pantries and benefits that are often difficult for them to find, through a text-message hotline and online directory. Now, amid inflation, they're expanding in other parts of the northeast. (New York City Patch)
