Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- Two armed men were arrested and taken into police custody at Penn Station on Saturday following an investigation by the FBI/NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force and NYPD Counterterrorism and Intelligence Bureau investigators. The men presented a threat to the city's Jewish community, according to NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell. (New York City Patch)
- The New York Cannabis Control Board is set to vote today on which individuals and nonprofits to award the first legal recreational cannabis retail licenses. Ahead of the vote, the Office of Cannabis Management released the names of 36 finalists that are likely to be approved, the majority of whom had been convicted of marijuana-related offenses. - New Yorkers gathered at Stonewall Inn on Sunday to mourn the loss of lives at an LGBTQ+ bar in Colorado. Sunday was also Transgender Day of Remembrance, with the nonprofit Gays Against Guns planning to hold a vigil for trans people killed in the past year. (CBS New York)
- Another vigil in Corona Plaza, Queens, remembered the at least 32 32 transgender, gender non-conforming, or non-binary individuals that had been killed so far this year in the United States, according to the Humans Rights Campaign. (Gay City News)
- Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso is investing the entire $45 million of his fiscal year 2023 budget into an initiative to improve Black and Latino women's maternal healthcare throughout the borough's most at-risk communities. The funding will build a new birthing center and renovate the facilities at two hospitals. According to the NY Daily News this is the first time a Borough President has spend the entirety of their budget on a single entity. (Subscription/New York Daily News)
- Dashing hopes for a full return to the workplace just 47 percent of employees are in the office on a given workday in New York City, and just nine percent are in the office everyday. In other economic recovery news, New York is weathering inflation on average better than the rest of the country, according to local Consumer Price Index data. (THE CITY)
