Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- New Yorkers are working hard to provide support to Puerto Rico as the island begins to recover from the destruction of Hurricane Fiona, which made landfall on practically the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Maria. Local and national nonprofits such as the Hispanic Federation are collecting donations, while NY Governor Kathy Hochul announced the state is sending 50 Spanish-speaking police officers to coordinate efforts with local authorities. (Gothamist)
- A young mother who sought asylum in New York City died by suicide in a shelter on Sunday, according to Mayor Eric Adams. She was one of the 11,000 migrants who have arrived in the city in recent months – many of whom were sent in buses from Texas. On Monday Adams said placed the blame for the woman's death on the "whole experience" created by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. (New York City Patch)
- The new Big Apple Connect program will bring free high-speed internet to over 300,000 NYCHA public housing residents in 100 developments by the end of 2023, Mayor Adams announced. The program was first piloted in Langston Hughes Houses in Brownsville. (New York City Patch)
- A new City Council bill would require the NYC Fire Department to diversify its ranks. The department is reportedly one of the least diverse city agencies, with a majority of white male firefighters, with women making up just one percent of the force. The bill requires the FDNY to create a hiring plan that would reflect the diversity of the city's demographics. (Gothamist)
- An official in the Adams administration, Annemarie Gray, is joining the prominent pro-development advocacy group Open New York as its new executive director, looking to take the fight for new housing to Albany. The organization was a major backer of the controversial Soho/Noho and Gowanus. (New York City Patch) Speaking of development, a developer is hoping to rezone the middle of an Upper East Side block to make way for a 46-story apartment building. (New York City Patch)
