Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- An NYPD civilian worker was shot dead on Monday morning by a man, in what appears to have been a domestic dispute, according to police. A bystander was also shot while trying to assess the situation. (New York City Patch)
- Lawmakers are aiming to turn New York into a "safe harbor" for women seeking abortions. Proposed legislation would cover the transportation costs of those traveling from 26 states poised to pass restrictive anti-abortion laws if Roe V. Wade is overturned. Attorney General Letitia James would also like to enshrine the right to choose into the state's constitution. (New York City Patch)
- The MTA will begin instructing bus drivers to not immediately open the back and center doors, in an attempt to curb fare evasion. Those exit doors will still open, but only if a customer requests them. The new policy will not apply on Select Bus Service routes. (New York Post)
- NYC school students will no longer need to show proof of their COVID-19 vaccination status in order to attend prom this spring, Mayor Adams announced. This comes shortly after he raised a similar mandate on graduation ceremonies. (amNY)
- Mayor Sadiq Khan of London joined Adams on Monday to announce NYC's new "planetary diet." Joining 100 cities across the globe, New York is committing to fight climate change by purchasing sustainable food for schools and other public venues, and creating less waste. (New York City Patch)
