NYPD Officer Seriously Injured While Attempting To Arrest Robbery Suspect

NEW YORK CITY — An NYPD officer was seriously injured while he was trying to arrest a robbery suspect in the Bronx Thursday night.

The incident happened inside an apartment building at 1015 East Gun Hill Road, around 10:20 p.m., police said.

Officers were searching for a suspect who had allegedly robbed his mother and his older brother at gunpoint on Van Nest Avenue, an hour earlier.

When the officers arrived on the scene, the suspect fired three shots inside the apartment before forcing his way out the front door.

A struggle ensued as officers attempted to take the suspect into custody — that's when an officer fell backwards.

Another officer then discharged her firearm, striking the suspect twice. He is listed in critical condition, according to NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera.

"Thankfully, our officers were able to apprehend the suspect, and our injured officer is expected to make a full recovery," he told reporters.
