Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- Developers withdrew their proposal to build two 363-foot towers in Harlem with hundreds of apartments — both market-rate and affordable — hours before it was expected to face a vote in City Council. The project, dubbed One45, had faced steep opposition from local Councilwoman Kristin Richardson Jordan, as well as the Harlem community. (New York City Patch)
- At least five people were killed during a "bloody" Memorial Day weekend in New York City. The last fatal shooting occurred early on Tuesday morning, when police found a man with a gunshot wound to his head in Bed-Stuy. (New York City Patch)
- Dozens of home healthcare workers rallied in support of a bill in the City Council that would put an end to 24-hour shifts. The workers, primarily elderly Asian and Hispanic women, say that working for 24 hours has been burdensome to both their physical and mental health. The legislation, introduced by Councilman Christopher Marte, has 21 co-sponsors with four more members pledging their support. (amNY)
- Work on bringing ferry service to Coney Island has been put on pause indefinitely, after local residents raised concerns about exposure to toxic soil that may have been contaminated during dredging. They were also concerned that their nearby green space could be over-run by tourists. (Brooklyn Paper)
- The education department released next year's public school calendar on Tuesday. Classes start on September 8 and end on June 27. Snow days include remote learning. (New York City Patch)
- In other education-related news, the DOE's free Summer Meals program begins on June 28 and runs through September 2. It is free for anyone under 18. (News 12)
- State lawmakers struck a deal on Tuesday that clears the path for a vote on a bill to reduce class sizes to 20 students in k-third grade classes, 23 in fourth-eighth, and 25 in high schools. They are also hoping to extend mayoral control of the school system for another two years. (Gothamist)
