Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. The first woman-owned cannabis dispensary in New York State is opening in Jamaica, Queens on Thursday, making it also the first in the borough and third in the city. The owner, Extasy James, had been criminalized during marijuana prohibition. (Queens Patch)
  2. New York City politicians rallied in Harlem on Monday in support of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in what they described as a "Republican-backed racist and hate-based rhetoric targeting D.A. Bragg and his family." Meanwhile, the grand jury investigating Donald Trump's alleged hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels was reconvened. (Harlem Patch)
  3. NYC's Public Advocate Jumaane Williams wants Mets owner Steve Cohen to rename the baseball team's Citi Field stadium, over concerns that Citibank is contributing to climate change. "If Citi refuses to end their toxic relationship with the fossil fuel industry, the Mets should end their partnership with Citi," he said. (Queens Patch)
  4. So-called "disadvantaged communities" across New York are set to be the first in line to receive funding meant to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They include many areas in Upper Manhattan, The Bronx and Central Brooklyn. The push for reductions is part of a state law passed in 2019 requiring New York State to have a carbon-neutral economy by 2050. (Gothamist)
  5. A new partnership with the Special Olympics will give approximately 1,700 students with disabilities the opportunity to play sports during the day and after school, public schools Chancellor David Banks announced. (New York Daily News)

  • The developer behind a massive rezoning on 145th Street in Harlem plans to open a community center on the now-vacant lot while his redevelopment proposals are still pending. (Harlem Patch)
  • New Yorkers could face fines of up to $50 for sitting more than 90 minutes in the new Long Island Railroad station at Grand Central — a rule that already applies in the older part of the expanded station. (AMNY)
  • New York City only had 182 commercial movie theaters in 2020 — and right now in the Bronx there's only two. Some residents say they're not all that missed. (Bronx Times)
