Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. Seven subway lines will see reduced service on Mondays and Fridays starting in June 2023, the MTA announced yesterday, attributing the changes to shifts in ridership since the pandemic, partially due to remote and hybrid work. Several lines (G, J and M) will see increased trips on the weekends. (New York City Patch)
  2. Uber and Lyft drivers protested on Monday morning after a judge blocked city-approved rate increases from going through due to a lawsuit by Uber. The increase began yesterday for taxi drivers, who now have a $3 initial charge, 70 cents per 1/5 mile when traveling above 12 mph or per 60 seconds in slow traffic or when the vehicle is stopped and more. (New York City Patch)
  3. Republican Congressman-Elect George Santos allegedly deceived New Yorkers by fabricating his past work and educational experiences, according to an investigation by The New York Times. Santos is set to take over the Eastern Queens and Long Island seat currently held by Tom Suozzi, who left it to run for governor. (New York City Patch)
  4. New York City's Human Resources Administration is currently processing just 46 percent of food stamp applications it receives, an agency official told the City Council. That's down from 60 percent in fiscal year 2022 and 92 percent before that. (City Limits)
  5. Brooklyn Bishop Lamor Whitehead was arrested on charges of fraud, extortion and lying to federal agents, federal prosecutors announced on Monday. The so-called “Bling Bling Bishop” is known for flaunting hundreds of thousands of dollars in jewelry. He was famously robbed during a live-stream sermon over the summer. (New York City Patch)
