Rockaway Beach Closed After Shark Sightings, City Officials Say

A woman told a lifeguard something jumped out of the water and grabbed a seagull, one beach-goer told Patch.

FAR ROCKAWAY, NY — All Rockaway beaches were shut down Tuesday after someone on the beach spotted a shark, officials said.

One beach-goer told Patch he saw a woman report to a lifeguard that something had jumped out of the water and grabbed a seagull.

"The staff was fantastic and everyone complied and got out of the water," @CoachMissmer said in conversation with Patch on Twitter. "I've seen Jaws 100 times so it was real easy for me to stay on the shore!"

The NYPD alerted New Yorkers beaches were closed until further notice.

"ALL of the Rockaway beaches are currently closed for swimming due to shark sitings until further notice," the NYPD tweeted about 2:50 p.m. "The boardwalk is still OPEN!!!Thank you"

This sighting came just two days after shark sightings closed a large swath of Rockaway Beach Sunday, the Parks Department said.
