Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- Vacant newsstands are set to be transformed into hubs for NYC's 'deliveristas,' with $1 million secured by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. The hubs, which could expand further after a pilot program, don't include bathrooms, but starting in January restaurants will be required to open their facilities to delivery workers. (New York City Patch)
- New York State's emergency rental assistance program has received an injection of close to $100 million from the federal government, at the same time that apartment prices rise to record levels. Advocates are hoping that more relief funds can be allocated from other states. (New York City Patch)
- New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has been criticized recently for purchasing $600 million worth of at-home COVID-19 tests from a company that's led by a major campaign donor. Her Republican opponent Congressman Lee Zeldin is taking issue with the purchase in the last month of the campaign, although Hochul defends her decision. (Gothamist)
- An interactive map made by Patch shows New Yorkers hazardous housing violations recorded in city databases in a dozen neighborhoods over the course of last week. These "immediately hazardous" violations must be responded to by landlords within 24 hours in most cases. (New York City Patch)
- The number of firefighters and EMS members of the FDNY who have died of 9/11-related cancers and other health complications is expected to soon exceed the number that died in the line of duty during the Sept. 11 terror attack. The news comes at the same time the World Trade Center Health Program is facing a $3 billion deficit. (New York Daily News)
- Meanwhile, a new bill would require employers to inform 9/11 survivors of the health care assistance they are eligible for. (Spectrum NY 1)
