Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. NYC Mayor Eric Adams released a report Wednesday showing a high rate of recidivism — 25 percent — for some crimes, arguing that a "dangerousness" clause needs to be added to the state's bail laws. Advocates dispute his claims that the recent rise in crime is directly attributable to bail reform. (New York City Patch)
  2. Mayor Adams also announced an additional $150 million for the school budget. He's still defending his decision to cut funding by $215 million due to a fall in enrollment, but said he'd like to give schools more "flexibility" in the upcoming year. (New York City Patch)
  3. The Staten Island Ferry announced a significant cut in service on Wednesday, with commute-time boats leaving every hour rather than the usual fifteen minutes. The city blames the cuts on workers not showing up, but the union representing the ferry's crew sights a labor dispute. They've been operating under an expired contract since 2010. (THE CITY)
  4. In a debate for the redistricted Upper East-West 12th congressional district, both incumbent Reps. Carolyn Maloney and Jerry Nadler declined to say outright whether or not they think President Biden should run for re-election in 2024. "I don't believe he's running for reelection," said Maloney, who later clarified in a tweet that she would support him if he did choose to run. (Associated Press)
  5. Seventeen thousand New Yorkers that had recently updated their voter registration were sent incorrect information about which Congress and State Senate district they're supposed to be in. The Board of Elections attributed the error to the chaotic redistricting process.(Gothamist)
