Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- Transit advocates are rallying for trains and buses in New York City to arrive every 6 minutes at all times, while, according to a recent survey, just 48% of New Yorkers were happy with the transit system's wait times. The MTA currently has a budget deficit of $1.6 billion as ridership still stalls below pre-pandemic levels. (Gothamist)
- Back when he was Brooklyn Borough President, now-Mayor Eric Adams presented 'boozy' poison bucket traps as a solution to curbing New York City's rat population. Several years later, a study from the traps' pilot program has let to surface. Experts say the best way to end (or at least reduce) the city's current rat infestation is by limiting the rodents' food supply. (New York City Patch)
- There have been 1,600 substantiated cases of corporal punishment in New York State's schools from 2016 to 2021, according to Department of Education documents–a large portion of them coming from New York City public schools, although the NYC school cases didn't indicate whether teachers or other employees faced discipline. (Times Union)
- Speaking of schools, some NYC parents say that their children's public schools are still using a popular but potentially inadequate curriculum that could make it more difficult for students to learn how to read. Schools Chancellor David Banks had previously pledged to replace the program, known as the Calkins curriculum. (Gothamist)
- New York City elected officials and the consul general of Pakistan gathered over the weekend to bring awareness to the catastrophic flooding in the country which they said has impacted 33 million people and taken 1,600 lives since June. (New York 1)
