Strawberry Moon Rises Over NYC This Week: What To Know

June's full moon is named for the red summer fruit that ripens underneath it. It may also be the source of the phrase "honeymoon."

NEW YORK CITY — A June supermoon named for the fruit that ripens underneath it could light up the sky in New York City Monday and Tuesday nights, forecasters say.

The full strawberry moon first shone Sunday night but will reach its peak Tuesday morning, just after 7:50 a.m., and last through Wednesday morning, according to NASA.

New Yorkers looking to catch a glimpse of the strawberry moon should look southeast — where it will appear "large and golden-hued" — Monday just after sunset, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

This is a moon with many names. Europeans have dubbed it the Mead or Honey Moon — after the brewing season for the fermented drink — and it may be the source of term "honeymoon," according to NASA.

Here in the U.S., we use the name granted it by Algonquin tribes who connected the supermoon to the season for harvesting strawberries.
