Major Felonies On NYC Subways Saw Decrease Last Month: NYPD

A number of major felonies reported in the subway system decreased last month, police said.

The latest figures come after the NYPD and Governor Kathy Hochul over 1,200 additional NYPD officers into the subway system, as well as 300 officers to patrol subway trains overnight​.

NEW YORK CITY — New York City subway crime — including some major felonies — dropped last month, according to newly released NYPD transit data.

In January, there were 147 major crimes reported on the subway, compared to 231 in January 2024, according to the data.

Murders, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, and grand larceny, decreased by approximately 20 percent from December 2024 to January 2025.

There were no murders reported on the subway in January, compared to 1 murder in January 2024.

Robberies saw a 45.1 percent decrease with 28 incidents, while January 2024 had 51.

Felony assaults decreased 18 percent in January, police said. Burglaries numbers dropped 50 percent compared to the same period last year

In addition, grand larceny decreased by more than 40 percent compared to the same time last year

The latest figures come after the NYPD and Governor Kathy Hochul over 1,200 additional NYPD officers into the subway system, as well as 300 officers to patrol subway trains overnight.

In December, an additional 250 National Guard members were deployed into the subway system, adding on to an existing 750 members.
