Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- Subway cleaners are afraid to clean the transit system's 50 t0 60 public bathrooms, MTA Chair Janno Lieber said during a recent TV interview. That and staffing shortages have increased the problem of dirty subway toilets. (New York City Patch)
- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has released a study detailing how to protect the New York City region from future storm surges and coastal flooding. The study's $52 billion recommended 'tentative plan' includes constructing 12 storm surge gates and protecting over 41 miles of NYC coastline (including in East Harlem) with flood barriers. The public can submit comments on the plan through January 2023. (Gothamist)
- Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson is critical of New York City Mayor Eric Adams' plan to temporarily house newly arrived migrants in tents at Orchard Beach, given that the site picked out is in a high-risk flood zone. (New York Daily News)
- In El Paso, Texas, thousands of migrants have been sent voluntarily to New York City since August by the city's government. THE CITY took a tour inside the busing operation and found that migrants had to sign papers that were only offered in English agreeing the city of El Paso wouldn't be liable for the two-day trip north. - New York City Councilman Shaun Abreu plans to introduce a bill this week that would make it illegal for employers and landlords to discriminate against job or housing applicants based on their tattoos. The bill would have some exceptions, though it's unclear what they will be. (New York Daily News)
