NEW YORK CITY — A 30-year-old man has been indicted for brutally attacking a woman while she rode her bike in Randall's Island last month, prosecutors said.

After the attack, the suspect stole the victim’s bike and rode away. He then threw the bike into the Harlem River, prosecutors said.

The following day, Jiraud called 911 at 5:00 a.m., claiming to have first stumbled upon the victim’s body during an early morning walk.

When first responders arrived, they found the victim unresponsive, lying on the riverbank, with her sweatshirt removed, and her shoes off.

“A 44-year-old woman was riding her bike home from work when Miguel Jiraud allegedly brutally attacked her without provocation. To this day, she remains severely cognitively impaired,” District Attorney Alvin Bragg said. “This conduct is abhorrent. I hope she continues to recover from this terrifying assault, and I want to assure New Yorkers that we will ensure accountability for those who commit such acts of violence.”

The victim was transferred to Elmhurst Hospital where she was treated for numerous skull fractures, a puncture wound to her temple, and multiple abrasions. She experienced massive brain hemorrhaging, requiring multiple surgeries to remove a portion of her skull and brain itself to control intracranial swelling.
