NYC's 40 Most Eligible Singles, According To Painfully New Yorky Dating App 'Hinge'
The singles are ranked by profile likes, educational prestige and career success.
NEW YORK, NY — Of the litany of dating apps trying to profit off the craterous demand for human connection carved out by the Single And Chronically Unsatisfied Millennial Of The Two-Thousand-Tens, Hinge, a career- and status-centric "relationship app" for "the community of people who want more," has to be the New Yorkiest. (And where, after all, can you find a higher concentration of single and chronically unsatisfied millennials than in New York City, fertile land of commitment phobia and backup-option overstock?)
Hinge wasn't always so New Yorky. The app's strategy when it first launched in 2013 was to match daters with friends of friends, using data pulled from their Facebook profiles.
That didn't work, business-wise. "We were just going to lose out essentially to Tinder over time as it swallowed us because we weren't different enough and our product wasn't living up to our vision," Hinge's CEO told NPR.

So, in 2016, the app upped its Manhattan factor. In their Hinge profiles, users now list where they live, where they work and where they went to school, and answer cutesy questions about their hopes and dreams and favorite local hangouts.
Hinge's latest effort to build a larger customer base is equally New Yorky: The company released a definitive list Tuesday of the 40 most eligible singles currently using its platform.

Singles were ranked based on 1) number of profile "likes," 2) success within their respective industries and 3) the prestige of their college education.
The resulting Top 40 list reads like a Forbes ranking crossed with a casting portfolio for ABC's "The Bachelor": A bunch of well-groomed 20-and 30-somethings, smiling out from a series of suspiciously professional-looking portraits, emblazoned with personality-defining sound bytes and sorted by career/alma mater/location.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Hinge's highly eligible humans are most densely clustered in Williamsburg and the East Village (five each). Kips Bay, the West Village and Chelsea tie for a close second (three each).
Below is Hinge's full ranking, in all its New Yorkiness, with the most eligible single at spot No. 1. Likin' what you're seein'? Download the app here.
