Thunderstorms Expected To Roll Through NYC Thursday Into Friday

The never-ending cycle of humidity is supposed to finally break for the city.

NEW YORK, NY — There's finally a little bit of relief on the way for New York City's extended stretch of heat and humidity. But before the weather cools off the city this weekend, residents should prepare for possibly heavy thunderstorms overnight Thursday into Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for all five boroughs as a prelude to possible thunderstorm watches or warnings. According to the NWS, a low pressure system will approach from the southwest Thursday night and rumble through the region on Friday morning. There is also a threat of flash flooding overnight into Friday.

There's a chance for showers starting at about 10 p.m. with it increasing to likely by 1 a.m. New York City could be looking at 1 to 1 1/2 inches of rain from late Thursday through the day on Friday with the heaviest amounts falling from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday. A rain chance remains throughout the weekend.

The good news is the front will lower temperatures for the weekend. The high on Saturday is 85 degrees and on Sunday it should only reach 83. It's not a big decrease, but after a week of flirting with 90 to 95 degrees every afternoon, it's something.

The last round of thunderstorms to roll through came on July 25, when streets flooded and rainbows appeared, but the temperatures didn't break.
