- A Times Square hotel will soon be home to 200 asylum seeker families that have recently arrived from Texas, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Wednesday. It joins Randalls Island's 'tent city' as the second emergency migrant shelter. Adams' announcement came one day after he told New Yorkers can expect migrant facilities to come to "every community." - The same strain of poliovirus that left a teenager in suburban New York paralyzed has been detected in NYC's sewage. The city's overall polio vaccination rate stands at 86.2 percent, although several Brooklyn and Manhattan neighborhoods are further behind. (New York City Patch)
- In more positive medical news, NYC's Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan believes the city's 'turned a corner' in combatting monkeypox, which has declined from a peak in August of 70 cases per day to fewer than 10 last week. (Gothamist)
- The City Council just voted to approve a series of bills that will bring NYC closer to creating universal child care, by setting up a three-year child care grant program for providers at risk of closure, creates a comprehensive child care directory and establishing an advisory board to craft policies that will move the city toward universal care in five years. - Meet The Big Apple's new cannabis boss, Brooklyn born and raised Dasheeda Dawson, who will lead the city's new Cannabis NYC initiative, which will assist entrepreneurs hoping to enter the industry, "absorbing the illicit market with persuasion and incentives instead of punishment."
