Tornadoes Possible As Severe Storms Take Aim At NYC

NEW YORK CITY – Severe storms threatening to hit NYC Wednesday could bring large hail and even tornadoes, the National Weather Service warned.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for the region.

"There is the potential for isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms with the main threat being damaging winds, however, small to large hail is possible," the outlook says.

"And an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out."

The thunderstorms will be develop Wednesday morning ahead of a cold front across upstate New York and track across eastern Pennsylvania and metropolitan New York late in the afternoon and the evening.

Up to half an inch of rain is expected to fall.

Showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Some storms could be severe, with hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain. High near 82. West wind 6 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 9pm. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. West wind 5 to 8 mph.

Thursday
A 30 percent chance of showers after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 84. Light and variable wind becoming southwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.

Thursday Night
A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 68. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Friday
A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon.
