Trash To Be Hauled Off More Often In These NYC Neighborhoods

NEW YORK, NY — Street-corner garbage cans are getting emptied more often in several New York City nieghborhoods thanks to a funding boost for the service, the City Council said.

More than 171 neighborhoods will benefit from an increase in corner waste receptacle pickup that started July 1 supported by $14.7 million in the current city budget, Council officials said.

The effort aims to keep streets clean across the city but will focus on outer-borough areas where trash pickup hasn't kept pace with growing commercial corridors, such as East New York, Jackson Heights and Jamaica, a Council spokeswoman said.

"Clean streets are imperative to the health of our communities and residents," Councilman Antonio Reynoso (D-Brooklyn) said in a statement. "Yet in the past, the services provided to low-income outer borough neighborhoods have lagged behind those provided to wealthier districts."

The budget for the 2019 fiscal year expanded daily corner pickups to an additional 14 community boards, though service within each one will vary, the Council spokeswoman said.

The extra filth-hauling is funded by a $3.5 million increase in trash pickup funding plus the Council's $11.2 million NYC Cleanup initiative, which grew by $1 million this year, officials said.
