Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. Former President Donald Trump is set to be arraigned in a New York court on Tuesday, according to reports. A mug shot will likely be taken, but he isn't expected to wear handcuffs. Trump's lawyer said he expects Trump will face 34 counts of business fraud. (New York City Patch)
  2. The Centers for Disease Control is warning of a salmonella outbreak linked to raw flour, that has led to at least one case in New York. Three out of 12 patients are hospitalized. The CDC's recommendation: don't lick your spoon when cooking. (New York City Patch)
  3. Residents of two East Village apartment buildings say they have received massive rent increases of up to 25 percent since it was purchased by a private equity investment firm last year. They're also concerned that currently empty market-rate units could be deregulated if they get combined. Residents are supporting a Good Cause Eviction proposal that would limit rent increases in non-regulated apartments. (THE CITY)
  4. There are more dogs on the city's streets since the pandemic and less people scooping up their poop, city data reveals. Just 18 tickets were issued for failing to properly dispose of dog droppings in 2022 — down from 72 in 2019 — while a whopping 100,000 dog licenses were issued in 2020. (Gothamist)
  5. The city is considering a variety of new measures to prevent deaths caused by people falling into subway tracks — ranging from surveillance to artificial intelligence, to "calming blue lights." Eighty-eight people lost their lives in the city's subway and tracks in 2022. The MTA is also putting out a request for proposals for physical platform barriers this spring. (New York Daily News)
