Trump Says De Blasio 'Stole' His Campaign Slogan

The mayor stood in front of a sign Monday that said "Promises Made, Promises Kept" — which happens to be a Trump campaign slogan.

NEW YORK — New York Democrats can't stay away from The Donald's taglines. President Donald Trump slammed Mayor Bill de Blasio Tuesday for ripping off one of his campaign slogans at a City Hall event.

The Democratic mayor stood in front of a sign at a Monday groundbreaking for an East New York school that read "Promises Made, Promises Kept." Banners bearing the same language have been hung at Trump campaign rallies, and the Republican National Committee used the phrase to headline a webpage backing the president.

Trump took to Twitter Tuesday morning to accuse de Blasio of stealing the motto, saying the mayor had "no imagination."

"Bill DeBlasio, the high taxing Mayor of NYC, just stole my campaign slogan: PROMISES MADE PROMISES KEPT!" Trump wrote. "That’s not at all nice. No imagination!"

But the mayor, a vocal critic of the president, argued there was a clear distinction in a Tuesday tweet of his own.

"The difference is that I’m not lying when I say it," de Blasio wrote.

The unflattering shoutout came after Trump's Friday Twitter tirade targeting Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who made headlines last week for saying America "was never that great" in a riff on Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan.

Cuomo walked back the remark after it drew a firestorm of criticism from conservatives.

De Blasio's top spokesman had reportedly dismissed comparisons between the mayor's signage and Trump's slogan. "This is not novel rhetoric," press secretary Eric Phillips told the New York Daily News on Monday.

Trump, a famously prolific Twitter user, wasn't always so unfriendly to de Blasio in his tweets. Asked in 2013 about the possibility of de Blasio taking over as mayor, Trump wrote, "I predicted two years ago that he would win!"
