Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- Two men were fatally shot by NYPD officers in separate incidents in Brooklyn and Queens on Saturday night. In both cases, they had displayed firearms before the cops opened fire. (ABC 7 New York) At a press conference on Sunday, Mayor Eric Adams praised the officers' actions, saying "they did an amazing job saving the public, saving the lives of people, and terminating that threat." (AMNY)
- New York City's City Council districts are set to be redrawn this year, following the redistricting of State Assembly, Senate, and Congressional districts. Preliminary maps will likely be released this Friday, and there's bound to be some big changes. Some neighborhoods, like the west side of Manhattan and the northern Brooklyn waterfront, saw large population gains, so their districts will need to contract in size. (New York Post)
- Cars equipped with mobile sensors will begin monitoring air quality in parts of Manhattan and the Bronx, kicking off a statewide initiative to track air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions at a hyperlocal level. The data will be analyzed and help state and city agencies to implement solutions in the communities most affected by poor air quality. (Gothamist)
- The NYPD and sanitation department's controversial homeless encampment sweeps continue on. One of the most recent one occurred in Manhattan's Chinatown on Thursday, where the possessions of several homeless individuals living on the street were confiscated. (AMNY)
- The Department of Education is planning to hire staff specifically dedicated to meeting the needs of students living in the city's foster care system, starting as early as next school year. (New York Post )
