Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. Rent in Manhattan (and around the city) is at an all-time high, a new study finds. The average rent for an apartment in April was $3,925 — a 32 percent increase from April 2021. The price for a three-bedroom apartment is as high as $6,000. (New York City Patch) Speaking of high prices, all but two Manhattan Council Members are urging the Rent Guidelines Board not to approve a 2-6 percent rent hike on rent-stabilized units. (New York City Patch)
  2. NYC school principles and education advocates are concerned about the prospect of a $215 million budget cut to the Department of Education. The cut, they say, would make it impossible for them to implement a newly-passed law to decrease class sizes. The city government cites decreased enrollment as cause for the cuts. (New York Post)
  3. Forget inflation, New York City's latest trend is "shrinkflation." That's because, while the price of goods at the grocery store has increased, the amount in a given serving or portion has also decreased. (New York City Patch)
  4. Governor Kathy Hochul faced off against Democratic primary challengers Jumaane Williams and Tom Suozzi in a debate Tuesday night. The three sparred on topics ranging from gun control to reproductive rights, but eventually found common ground around ghosts, which they all believe in. (Gothamist)
  5. It's "time to decide if we are going to be a nation of laws, or a confederation of chaos." That's what Mayor Adams told Congress on Wednesday during a trip to Washington to advocate for gun safety laws that would mandate background checks and raise the age to purchase semiautomatic weapons. Two communities in Manhattan and Brooklyn are fighting for historic preservation:

  • An Upper West Side Community Board voted against revoking the landmark status of a historic church. The church's owners say they don't have sufficient economic resources to complete necessary renovations. (New York City Patch)
  • In Bed-Stuy, neighbors are scrambling to save a beloved French Gothic-style mansion from demolition. If demolished, developers plan to build condos in its place. (New York City Patch)
