Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. A lone rent-stabilized tenant on the Upper East Side was defeated by a developer, Extell, in a Sept. 27 court ruling that would allow for his building to be demolished. Extell has plans to build a massive apartment tower on the 86th street block and has spent years buying and demolishing the other low-rise buildings on it. Lawyers fear this case could set a dangerous precedent for rent-regulated tenants. (New York City Patch)
  2. New York City's median household income dropped $4,000 to $84,409, during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2019 to 2021, a new study found. The decline in NYC appears to be an exception compared to many major cities that saw incomes stay level. (New York City Patch)
  3. New Yorkers will get a chance to vote on three racial justice ballot proposals this November that were crafted by a Racial Justice Commission formed by former Mayor Bill de Blasio. The measures would, in short, add to the city's values the goal of a “just and equitable city for all,” create a new city agency aimed at improving racial equity, and craft a new set of guidelines for defining cost of living. (Gothamist)
  4. Mayor Eric Adams' spokesperson Fabien Levy accused The New York Post of penning a "vile" and "sexist" report over the weekend, which detailed how the Mayor and Education Chancellor David Banks hired each other's romantic partners to work lucrative top jobs in their respective offices. (New York City Patch)
  5. Queens politicians would like an abandoned stretch of rail lines connecting Rego Park with The Rockaways to be integrated into the subway system. The city is currently planning to spend $35 million on a greenway project that wouldn't include public transit. (AMNY)
