Watch: High-Tech Ferries To Take Strain Off NYC Commuting

Ferry stops are being built in Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn.

NEW YORK CITY, NY — A new fleet of 20 ferries is easing the strain of moving the city's ever-growing population. This summer, high-tech catamarans will start serving commuters. "This is back to the future, this is going back to what NYC had a century or more ago," said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

"There used be ferries all over the city, connecting all different parts of the city. So, we knew it was a viable idea."

Multiple new ferry stops are being constructed in Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn to accommodate the new boats and their passengers.

The service will make an estimated 4.6 million trips per year and each ferry ride will cost $2.75 — the same as a subway ride. The boats are designed to carry 150 passengers at a time.
