Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. News that the Biden administration is planning to cancel $10,000 in student loans — and $20,000 for Pell grant recipients — could affect one-in-six New Yorkers who have student loan debt, according to an analysis. In New York City, student loan holders are "more likely to be Black, younger than 45, experience material hardship and are more highly educated," while more than half owe over $20,000. (New York City Patch)
  2. NYC low and mid-income homeowners with a combined household income of under $250,000 are set to receive a one-time $150 property tax rebate, due to bipartisan City Council legislation signed by Mayor Eric Adams on Wednesday. (New York City Patch)
  3. Less than two percent of infants and toddlers in New York City have received a full vaccine against COVID-19. That comes out to about 8,000 in total, with six percent having received at least a first shot, despite the age group being eligible for vaccination since June. (Gothamist)
  4. A record number of migrants — 250 in total — arrived in New York City on Wednesday morning. About half a dozen people, one of them a three-month-old baby girl, needed to be immediately hospitalized after their journey, according to Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, who also asserted that the asylum seekers "did not give their consent in any real way to be sent here." (New York City Patch)
  5. New York State's top court of appeals granted Harvey Weinstein an appeal in his 2020 rape conviction, meaning that he could potentially get a retrial. Chief Judge Janet DiFiore made the decision, announcing that the court would hear oral arguments sometime in 2023. (NBC New York)
