16-Year-Old Driver Charged In Road Rage Incident After Hitting School Bus, Fleeing Cops: Police

The inexperienced driver tried to elude police by driving through yards, but eventually got stuck on large rocks, Stony Point PD said.

STONY POINT, NY — A teen driver is facing charges after a dangerous rampage that put more than just himself in danger, according to police.

On Tuesday, shortly after 3:30 p.m., the Stony Point Police Department got word of a car that was refusing to comply with the Clarkstown police who were responding to a road rage incident in their jurisdiction.

Stony Point police responded to the Palisades Parkway exits near Rt 210 and Willow Grove Road. A marked patrol unit spotted the suspect in traffic exiting Exit 15 near Route 210. The officer activated his emergency lights and attempted to pull over the teen driver, who then reversed and collided with an occupied school bus on the ramp, cops said. The teen then sped onto Rt 210 and back onto the Palisades headed south, according to police.

The vehicle crossed into the northbound lane before exiting onto Willow Grove Road. The driver ignored marked police cars and continued through the streets of the town, according to authorities. The suspect then drove through several residential yards, but was eventually caught up on large rocks and was unable to continue, according to police. Arriving officers were able to apprehend the driver and teenage passenger.

"Thankfully, there were no injuries to the public, the subjects or any officers involved," Stony Point Police Department officials said. "We were assisted by the New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Haverstraw Police, and the Rockland County Sheriff's Office."

The 16-year-old from Stony Point was charged with second-degree criminal mischief, three counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and a number of traffic violations. He was processed at the Stony Point Police station before being turned over to the Clarkstown Police on more serious charges.
