Alzheimer's Association Offers Free Educational Programs in Rockland

The Alzheimer's Association Hudson Valley Chapter is offering a variety of free programs over the upcoming weeks.

A variety of free programs by the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter are scheduled around Rockland County in the weeks and months ahead.

The Nanuet Public Library at 149 Church St. in Nanuet will host a series of three classes at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays starting with “Know the 10 Signs: Early Detection Matters” on July 27. “The Basics: Memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease” will be offered August 3, and “Healthy living for your brain and body: Tips from the latest research” will be held August 10.

“Know the 10 Signs” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 10, at Tappan Library at 93 Main St. in Tappan and “The Basics” will be offered at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 18, at Haverstraw King’s Daughters Public Library at 10 West Ramapo Road in Garnerville.

“Know the 10 Signs” will also be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, August 6, during a meeting of Jeevan Jyoti, an Indo-American Support Group for people over 50, at the Street School Community Service Room at 31 Zukor Road in New City.

“Alzheimer’s Advocacy 101,” a program for those interested in learning to be advocates who push for Alzheimer’s-related legislation, will be offered from 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 17, at Meals on Wheels at 121 West Nyack Road in Nanuet.

Meals on Wheels in Nanuet will also host an educational series from 7-8:30 p.m. every third Tuesday of the month through December. “Healthy living for your brain and body” is planned for July 19, “Know the 10 Signs” for August 16 and “Legal and financial planning for Alzheimer’s disease” for September 20. “Effective Communication Strategies” for caregivers of people with dementia is set for October 18 and “Coping with the Holidays” for November 15. The series will conclude with the “Virtual Dementia Tour” on December 20. This is a hands-on activity simulating symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia to help caregivers identify and cope with their loved ones’ behaviors and needs. Appointments are required for the 15-minute simulations and will be offered from 5-8 p.m. Call 845.649.6776 to reserve a slot.
