James Avaras the "top responder," Alan Handsman "Firefighter of the Year" for 2012.

Member of the New City Fire Department on Sunday paid tribute to a select group of volunteers who were the top responders in the department for 2013.

First Assistant Chief James Avaras was cited as New City FD's top responder for the year, having answered 530 alarms  — that averages out to 1.4 emergency calls a day.
