Birchwood Students Plant Friendship Garden

The sun shined brightly overhead as Birchwood School students took turns prepping the ground in a plot on the side of the school to plant a flower and herb garden on their annual Friendship Day.

“Our concept today is planting the seed of friendship,” said Susan Buchweitz, clinic supervisor, adding that the theme was "The Best Way to Have a Friend is to be a Friend."

She said members of the school’s student council, which was just formed last year, grew the seedlings. On Thursday the high schoolers patiently helped small groups of eager middle and elementary aged students pull weeds, dig holes, select plants and place them properly.

Buchweitz said the activity is part of the school’s OLWEUS Anti-Bullying Program. The school has been focusing on encouraging friendship and reinforcing that in various ways. Before the planting, some of the younger students read “The Giving Tree.”

When asked to explain the story about the tree, Nicolas said, “It gave love.”
Teachers and high school students Emily, Daniel and Andrew handed out gloves and trowels to third, and fourth graders Max, Austin, Abdiel, Nicholas and Erica; second graders James, Zoe and Sam and fifth grader Erin.

The younger students urged each other to help out with the digging and planting.
“I think I’m the only one working right now,” said Abdiel.

“It’s hard,” noted James.

Others worked quickly.

“I think we’re done,” said Nicholas.

They took pride in their work.

“I have a flower,” one boy said. “I know how to plant.”

Another chimed in, “This is proper landscaping.”

A reminder of the friendship theme is prominently on display in the front hallway of the school. Colorful fabric tiles created by student council members last year bear slogans such as “Don’t Be Mean” and “A Friend Is a Gift.”
