Elderly Pedestrian Injured In Suffern Hit-And-Run: PD

A motorist is facing multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated, according to police.

SUFFERN, NY — A 73-year-old woman was seriously injured Saturday afternoon after a vehicle struck her on Lafayette Avenue, police said.

An off-duty police sergeant saw the hit-and-run accident and quickly captured the driver after he fled the area, according to police.

Police Lt. William Simurra said the accident happened around 4:23 p.m. Saturday, on Lafayette Avenue near Woodland Drive.

Emergency personnel rushed the woman to a local hospital, police said. As of Monday, the victim remained in serious condition, according to police.

Police identified the motorist as Angel Mendoza-Raymundo. Police did not release his age or address.

Police have charged Mendoza-Raymundo with second-degree vehicular assault, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting serious physical injury, driving while intoxicated per se, and driving while intoxicated.

Mendoza-Raymundo was arraigned in Suffern Justice Court, and he has been released on his own recognizance, police said.
