SPRING VALLEY, NY — A Ramapo man has been charged with sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend, according to police.
Det. Sgt. Randy DiPaolo said police became involved in a domestic violence investigation on Dec. 9 around 4:30 p.m.
According to police, officers learned a woman had been “violently attacked inside of her residence and sexually assaulted by her ex-boyfriend” around 11:30 a.m. that day.

After police interviewed the woman, she returned home. Shortly afterward, a third party told police the suspect’s vehicle was outside the woman’s residence. While police were responding to her home, the man fled in a vehicle. Police located and stopped the vehicle and took the man into custody, according to DiPaolo.
Police on Tuesday identified the suspect as Andre Bernard, 50, of Ramapo.

Bernard was charged with first-degree rape, first-degree burglary, second-degree unlawful imprisonment, second-degree menacing, and criminal obstruction of breathing.
Bernard was arraigned in the Spring Valley Justice Court and later transferred to the Rockland County Jail.
Police said they later learned of a separate sexual assault against the same woman in early December. For that incident, police secured an arrest warrant to charge Bernard with additional counts, including first-degree rape, second-degree burglary, criminal obstruction of breathing, and second-degree menacing, police said.
