NY Troopers Rescue Man From Burning Vehicle: Police

The man's car caught fire after hitting a deer and then a tree on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Ramapo, according to state police.

RAMAPO, NY — Two state troopers are being credited with saving a man’s life Sunday after he was trapped in a vehicle that crashed on the Palisades Interstate Parkway and caught fire.

The one-car accident happened around 4:40 a.m. on the northbound side of the parkway near Exit 12 in Ramapo, according to state police.

When Troopers Derick Macaulay and Peter Pjetri arrived, they saw a Subaru Crosstrek that had struck a tree. The vehicle’s engine compartment was on fire, police said.

The driver was conscious, but injured and couldn’t exit the vehicle without help. The two troopers ran to the vehicle and pulled the man to safety, then went back to the car to make sure no one else was inside, according to police. The driver had been alone in the vehicle.

State police said the vehicle became “fully engulfed in flames,” moments later.

The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment, as he suffered two fractured ankles and facial injuries, according to police.

An initial investigation showed the driver was traveling northbound on the parkway when he hit a deer, lost control of the vehicle and then struck a tree, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
