Police Will Not Interview Young Stabbing Victim

Clarkstown police report Victoria Vovchik acted alone when she stabbed her daughter and then committed suicide.

The Clarkstown Police Department’s Detective Bureau announced on Thursday that Ava Sangavaram would not be interviewed about her mother stabbing her and then committing suicide. The bureau determined an interview would not provide additional evidentiary information about the February assault. Officers consulted with the second grader’s health care providers and decided an interview could possibly cause her additional trauma.

According to Sgt. Joanne Fratianni, “The investigation concludes that Victoria Vovchik acted on her own and is solely responsible for stabbing her 7 year old daughter numerous times and then successfully committing suicide.”

The bureau finished its investigation into the fatal incident, which occurred on February 28 at 6 Quarry Drive in New City.  The Rockland County Medical Examiner determined the 45-year-old died as a result of two self-inflicted incised wounds on her neck.

Ava’s father, Kristappa Sangavaram, 69, found the girl lying next to her mother in the master bedroom of the home around 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. The Woodglen Elementary School student was rushed to Westchester Medical Center where she was treated for multiple lacerations.
