Primary Election Spans Hotly Contested County and Town Races

Polls open Tuesday from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. for the Primary Election. Voters will be casting ballots in a host of Rockland County, town and village races. To find your polling location, go to the  county Board of Elections website. 

The Democratic Primary for Rockland County Executive pits former Spring Valley Justice David Fried against county legislator Ilan Schoenberger of Suffern. Vladimir Leon of Spring Valley is hoping to get into the race as a write-in candidate. 

Leon is also trying to make the Conservative Party primary for county executive a three-way race. Simon Leschinsky of Spring Valley and Thomas Sullivan of Nanuet are on the ballot while Leon is seeking write-in votes.

Schoenberger also has the backing of the Working Families and Independence parties. County legislator Ed Day of New City is the Republican Party’s candidate for county executive.

The Conservative Party ballot for Clarkstown Superintendent of Highways pits incumbent Wayne Ballard of New City against Stephen Peters of Nanuet. Ballard is the Republican Party nominee. On the Independence Party ballot for Clarkstown highway superintendent, Peter Eckhart of Congers is running against Ballard. Dennis Malone of Congers is the Democratic Party candidate for highway superintendent.

Primaries are being held for the Conservative, Working Families and Independence party lines for Clarkstown Justice. Four candidates are running for the two town justice seats up for election in November. The candidates are: Ed Kallen of New City, Scott Ugell of New City, Craig Johns of Nanuet and Adam Garth of West Nyack. 

Republicans Ugell and Johns are seeking-re-election. Kallen and Garth are the Democratic candidates.

Republicans have a three-way race for two Orangetown Town Council seats. Denis Troy of Pearl River and Thomas Diviny of Blauvelt are the incumbents and Andrew Wiley of Pearl River is the challenger.

Two Orangetown candidates for receiver of taxes are seeking the Independence Party vote. Incumbent Robert Simon is the only candidate on the ballot for the Independence line. Challenger Chris Smith is trying to get on the line as a write-in candidate. Simon of Pearl River already has the Republican nomination and Smith of Pearl River has the Democratic nod.
