Red Cross Shelters Residents Displaced By Spring Valley Apartment Fire
Residents from 47 units in the Surrey-Carlton Apartments were displaced, Red Cross officials said.
SPRING VALLEY, NY — Residents from 47 units in the Surrey-Carlton Apartments were displaced after a massive fire in a top-floor apartment Monday night.
Firefighters were called to 53 Ewing Ave. around 9:30 p.m.
A woman unconscious from smoke inhalation was brought downstairs by neighbors and taken to the hospital, police said.

A firefighter injured when debris fell on his head was also taken to the hospital. Fire officials said . the injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The fire, which spread through the attic, caused heavy smoke and water damage as well as destroying two apartments. Spring Valley was assisted by volunteers from neighboring departments.

The American Red Cross Metro New York North Chapter opened a shelter at the Louis Kurtz Civic Center overnight to support individuals and families in need of assistance after the fire. Overnight, nine adults and three children stayed in the emergency shelter.
Red Cross caseworkers were available at the Kurtz Center Tuesday to register residents and discuss their longer-term recovery needs. Residents displaced by the fire can also come to the Kurtz Civic Center for lunch, dinner and a warm place to spend the day.
The shelter will close tonight at 7 p.m. and reopen tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. as a daytime reception center for families, Red Cross officials said.
