Rockland And FEMA Officials Discuss Sandy Recovery

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) recently held a roundtable with local elected officials and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) representatives in Rockland County on the status of recovery from Hurricane Sandy. They reviewed the new Advisory Based Flood Elevation and Flood Insurance Rate maps for the county, discussed the assistance needed by homeowners and businesses that are still rebuilding and how to better prepare for future emergencies.   

“These meetings provided a chance for local officials to meet face-to-face with FEMA representatives so that we can make sure our communities can rebuild without delay,” said Lowey. “As they work to reconstruct and prepare for future disasters, it’s critical that our communities’ voices are being heard by our federal officials and that our home and business owners receive the certainty they deserve regarding new base flood elevation levels and flood insurance rates.”

Earlier this week Lowey’s office announced that Clarkstown received a $2.4 million FEMA grant for highway department costs incurred by hurricane cleanup.  Those funds came from a bipartisan effort that led to federal legislation in January providing $60 billion for rebuilding after Sandy.
