Rockland Gets 12 Percent Increase For Local Road And Bridge Repairs

Gov. Andrew Cuomo today announced $438 million in funding for local highway, road and bridge repairsin the 2013-14 Budget includes an increase of $75 million. The Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) funding goes to counties, cities, towns and villages throughout the state and this is the first increase since the 2008-09 Budget.

Under the budget, Rockland receives $1,443,853, an increase of $158,552 or 12.34 percent. The towns of Clarkstown and Orangetown fare even better.  Clarkstown’s funding of $559,688 represents an increase of $121,662 or 27.78 percent. Orangetown will receive $274,807 or $59,919 over the prior year, an increase of 27.88 percent.

Local villages do well also with an additional $15,499 designated for Nyack for a total of $73,693.  Piermont will gain 26.49 percent more for a total of $30,463.

"This Budget is about jobs, jobs, jobs, and by investing in rebuilding our state’s transportation infrastructure we are helping to grow local economies and create jobs in all corners of the state," said Cuomo. "During these difficult fiscal times, this $75 million increase in CHIPS funding is a big victory for our state's localities that will be able to use these much-needed funds to make repairs to local highways, bridges, and roads, and at the same time support job growth and economic development in their communities.”

The Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) was established by the Legislature in 1981. The funds go directly to local governments to support repairs to the highways, bridges, and roads that they operate and maintain.
